A car requires its first MOT when it reaches three years old. However, certain vehicles, such as taxis or those with nine or more seats, may have different requirements. An MOT checks key components of your vehicle to ensure they meet the legal safety and environmental standards. As a vehicle owner, it is your responsibility to maintain these standards at all times and ensure your car undergoes an MOT test every 12 months.
You must get an MOT for your vehicle:
By the third anniversary of its registration (for new vehicles)
Annually after its last MOT, if the vehicle is over three years old
Some vehicles require an MOT from one year old. For full details, visit the DVSA website.
