Introduction to Avon Tyres

The modern tyre, as we know it today, was revolutionized in 1888 by Scottish veterinarian John Boyd Dunlop in Belfast. His game-changing invention quickly inspired others, leading to the expansion of Avon Rubber—originally founded in 1885 in a small Avon valley village—into tyre manufacturing. By 1904, the Avon Tyres brand was born, and by 1911, the company was producing high-quality motorcycle tyres. While Dunlop faced financial struggles and went bankrupt in 1884, later becoming partially acquired by Japanese firm Sumitomo, Avon Tyres remained a proudly British tyre manufacturer. Even after its acquisition by the American company Cooper Tires in 1997, Avon continued to manufacture its premium tyres in the UK, maintaining its legacy of excellence.

Avon Tyres Tyre Speed Index

The speed index of your motorcycle tyre indicates the maximum speed at which your tyre is legally authorised to operate. The code is a letter (in some cases with a number as well) and you will find it on the sidewall of your tyre immediately after the 2-digit tyre load index code.
